A primary concern for a secondary position

For those of you reading this who aren't Husker fans, you'll probly click to something else as soon as you realize that I'm going to discuss the cornerback situation for the Big Red. Hell, there are probably only about five people reading this anyways. But that's neither here nor there.

For those of you who don't know, let me fill you in on the background information, and then maybe you'll understand the following paragraphs. Last year, NU's defensive backfield looked like it was comprised of D-league intramural players who had taken a couple bong hits before the games. The reason for this was that their best player, a kid named Zachary Bowman, had torn his ACL in preseason practice, meaning that to defend guys like Dwayne Jarrett (who by the way, is 6'5"), we trotted out the likes of Adam Jones and Cortney Grixby, who in comparison to Jarrett come up to approximately his waist. Oh, and did I mention that they can't cover people very well either? Yea, cause that's important to point out. And it wasn't just their fault, our safety play was atrocious as well (Shanle, that would be you).

ANNNNYWAYS, this year we got Bowman back. Primed to shut down opposing offenses, we knew that we now had our stud cover corner we so desperately lacked last year. Or so we thought. In a Prothroesque turn of events, Bowman tore a tendon in his knee in a freak accident when he got tangled up in 7 on 7 drills in practice. Just like that, the Huskers lost him for the next 4 to 6 months, meaning that if we are lucky enough to get him back, it wont be till conference play. For those who know the Husker's schedule, that means he will miss the USC game, and by USC I dont mean South Carolina. I mean the one in Compton with the bevy of freak recievers.

Some of you (those who dont really understand the passion of Nebraska fans) probly are like, what the hell is this guy complaining about? It's not that big of a deal, right? WRONG. For Nebraska fans, our world revolves around one team and one season. We dont have another sport to move onto, we dont have a couple professional teams to pick from. All we have is the Huskers, which is why losing someone who could contribute to the re-establishment of Husker dominance is a nauseating occurence. Here's to hoping that Jones, Grixpuke, and our JC transfers make some big strides leading up to the season.
